HISCORE

High Speed 3D and Colour Interface to the Real World

hiscore

HISCORE aimed at the development and validation of a cutting edge 3D-and colour subsystem based on off-the-shelf CCTV-cameras and projectors.

THE PROJECT

The technology developed in HISCORE was applied to two main application areas: face recognition and gesture recognition.

Despite the extreme increase in computing power in the last few years the man – machine interface technology is in principle the same as two decades ago: the main interface tools are now as always the keyboard, the mouse and the screen. Sometimes additional information from the visible world that we inhabit is fed to the computer by means of CCTV cameras, thus reducing the inherent 3-dimensional information to a two-dimensional image of it (in black & white or colour). However, for many applications the 3rd dimension carries valuable or indispensable information, many other applications require not only 3D but also colour in “real time”, i.e. at high acquisition speed.

The main objective of the proposal is therefore to provide a new low-cost, high speed 3D- and colour image acquisition system (“3D & Colour Camera“) that may be used as a computer input device in the very important mid-distance range (approx. 0.5 … 3m). Among the numerous conceivable fields of application for this system, 3 exemplary implementations with especially challenging problems that have considerable practical relevance will be carried out within the project.
