Europe-wide multimodal traffic information service

eMOTION

eMOTION aims at investigating and specifying a framework for a Europe-wide multimodal traffic information service offering real time information and special services for the road and public transport user, making information and various types of digital contents available for European travellers via on-trip-devices like PDA/Smart Phones or in-car-systems.

THE PROJECT

eMOTION investigated and defined an integrated framework and Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for the creation, use and deployment of real time information services on Europe-wide multimodal traffic and mobility. Architectural investigation and specification addressed both technical and non-technical issues, highlighting legal, organizational and business aspects related to the information integration process and defining a distributed reference architecture based on shared international data standards.

The provision of geo-referenced data and information within eMOTION is based on the specifications of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) including support for Location Based Services (LBS). Compliant to OGC specifications, the eMOTION information system includes service metadata managed and searched using a catalogue service as for dataset metadata.

eMOTION aimed at investigating and specifying a framework for a Europe-wide multimodal traffic information service offering real time information and special services for the road and public transport user, making information and various types of digital contents available for European travellers via on-trip-devices like PDA/Smart Phones or in-car-systems.

The range of services includes real time traffic information for road traffic and public transport, dynamic (and multimodal) routing services and special services like reservation of parking space, booking of personalized public transport services (e.g. Demand Responsive Transport) as well as additional travel-related services such as tourist information or hotel reservation.

Policies and scenarios for a Europe-wide information service have been investigated and developed that integrate different types of partners like content providers, service operators, service providers etc. from different transport modes (road, rail etc.) with different legal status, public and commercial partners, from countries all over Europe. The policies and scenarios covered legal aspects as well as implementation policies and data safety policies and meet in an organizational and legal framework for the service architecture. This framework offers the basis for the development of business cases that are particularly important for operating such an information service in e.g. a public-private partnership cooperation as well as for the exploitation and transfer of project experiences and results on a European level. In this context, also member states not participating in the consortium will be addressed explicitly, e.g. in co-ordination with other initiatives like the TEMPO projects.

eMOTION also aimed at defining the specification of technical options of this Europe-wide service architecture, including the adoption of the relevant standards as well as the validation of the framework conditions identified to show the feasibility of the concept.
