Innovative solutions for Intermodal node “Genoa Erzelli”

inge

The action InGE will be carried out by Municipality of Genoa, in the role of Coordinator, and by University of Genoa, algoWatt S.p.A. and Istituto Internazionale delle Comunicazioni.

The action is strictly connected with the global project addressing the new intermodal node of Genoa Erzelli, and specifically addresses innovative ICT solutions to improve the effectiveness and the impact on the territory deriving from the realisation of the global project itself.

THE PROJECT

The presence of all transport modes (air, rail, buses, private) candidates Erzelli node to become the most important intermodal node within Genoa’s urban area.

The following key operational tasks are needed to reach the overall objective:

  • Activity 1, related to an in-depth analysis of the territorial context, based on facilities already in operation, designed/under realisation and foreseen in the near future; in particular the technical characterisation of the intermodal node and of the different transport modes insisting on it. A focus on Erzelli Satellite City will evidence the expected characterisation of the area in terms of typology of services (Hospital, University, leisure services), companies and private homes based in the area, with the consequent qualitative and quantitative needs in terms of mobility.
  • Activity 2 comprehends a detailed assessment of the monorail link: transport targets, technical solutions adopted within the global project, scheme of the plant, dimensional parameters, needs of integration within the intermodal nodes and specific requirements.
  • Activity 3 addresses the definition of innovative ICT solutions to improve the performance of the node from the point of view of intermodality, starting from an in-depth survey of stakeholders and citizens needs. The analysis of enabling ICT systems managing different transport modes will be developed: airport, railway, buses, monorail link, interchange parking, with a particular focus on physical interfacing characteristics and eventual constraints/limitations in the possibility of realising an efficient integration. Passenger information tools, based both on physical supports within the node and in the access areas and virtual supports (web solutions) will be identified and designed, and intermodal integrated ticketing. Finally, smart and high performance tools to improve the effectiveness of the monorail control system.
  • Activity 4 addresses accessibility, safety and security aspects; in particular specific solutions towards disabled and mobility limited persons, ICT solutions for advanced passenger flow detection and cyber security tools.
  • Activity 5 provides specific guidelines for the implementation and activation of the ICT solution designed within previous activities 3 and 4, together with the evaluation of the related costs.
  • Activity 6 relates to technical and administrative management of the action, to specific initiatives of communication and dissemination towards Institutions, media, economic operators, citizens.

The relation between the global project and InGE action is synthetically the following:

  • The design of the monorail link from the airport to the intermodal railway station, and from the intermodal railway station to the Satellite City of Erzelli will be done within the global project.
  • It will comprehend, in particular, “essential” ICT facilities to operate the new link, integrating it within the intermodal node.
  • The innovative ICT solutions designed within InGE action will become a relevant added-value to the essential approach, focusing on specific aspects related to intermodality between air, rail, bus and private transport modes.
